Who We Are: Learning by Doing
African Parks partners with governments and communities to manage 24 protected areas across 13 countries. For two decades, we've been learning, building relationships, and solving problems together. Now, we're attempting something unprecedented: rewilding 2,000 southern white rhino across Africa. Together, we're ready.
Rescue: A Collective Effort
September 2023: After conducting thorough due diligence and with support from the South African Government, as well as securing emergency funding to enable the transaction, we took responsibility for 2,000 captive-bred rhino. Within one year, improved management increased the rhino population growth. Orphan rates dropped by 55%. These rhino – 15% of the world's remaining southern white rhino population – are thriving and ready for their journeys to new territories.
Rewild: The Journey Underway
The relocations began in 2024. First, 40 rhino arrived at Munywana Conservancy, then 120 reached the Member Reserves of the Greater Kruger Environmental Protection Foundation. More were moved to other locations in South Africa and, earlier this year, 70 rhinos were moved into Akagera National Park in Rwanda. Each journey involves veterinary teams, conservation partners, local communities, and governments. Our goal: to move 300 rhino annually. With each successful arrival, the vision is becoming a reality.
Renew: Rhino Change Everything
When rhino return, grasslands revive. Waterholes refill. Local livelihoods strengthen. Renewal unfolds step by step – grasses spread, food webs rebuild, damaged landscapes heal. Each rhino returned to the wild is a giant step towards a restored ecosystem.
